The success story of a 16 years old girl by name Blessing from Eket L.G.A but living with a friend in Ikono in Uyo L.G.A of Akwa Ibom state. Her mother died earlier and the father abandons her. She dropped out of school at JSS 3, became pregnant and the man responsible ran away. Having no home and no one to care for her, one of her friends begged her mother and she accepted her in their home. The woman has no means of reasonable income and so could not afford to take her to a good hospital for antenatal care. During labour pain, she was taken to a traditional Birth Attendant (TBA). She was there for two days and the baby died in-utero. She was then taken to a hospital on the third day to pull-out the body which was left hanging between her legs. She ended up with partial urethral loss, extensive circumferential/ VVF with bladder prolapsed; left ureteric fistula; large high RVF/ severe acquired gynaetresia/ bilateral foot drop. She is still at the rehabilitation Centre
The success story of a 23 years old girl “B”
B lost her father at very young age of 10. She had a younger one who could not survive the hardship of hunger and poor parenting. He died at the age of six. Their mother got married to another man while B was left under the care of her grandmother. She was backward in education due to financial constraint and while she was about to finish her primary education at 18 years, her grandmother died. There was nothing for her to hope on anymore as she said. She never went to school again but started petty trading just to eat. At 22 years she became pregnant by a man who promised to marry her, but walked out of her when she became pregnant. She cared for the pregnancy with the little money she was making and whatever her mother was able to help her with. She attended no natal services and during labour, she was in a prayer house for three (3) days until the baby died. She ended up with VVF/ RVF, bilateral foot drop and gynaetresia. On her arrival to the hospital, we started her on a high protein. She was even transfused with blood. Her being dry of both feaces and urine at first surgery is a big surprising good news. She will still need another repair for vaginal reconstruction. She is registered in our rehabilitation Centre for sewing.
