Each year, 50,000 to 100,000 women worldwide develop obstetric fistula, an abnormal connection between the vagina and rectum or bladder, according to the World Health Organization; the organization reported that it "may develop after prolonged and obstructed labor and lead to continuous urinary and fecal incontinence."
